The Father is Determined to Give You the Kingdom

In the today's Daily Office Gospel reading, Jesus assures us it is the Father's will to give us the Kingdom. In the the RSV, it is the Father's “pleasure” to give us the Kingdom; in Monsignor Knox's translation, we are told that the Father is “determined to give [us] his kingdom.” Having this assurance of the Father's love and provision, we are free to share and be generous ourselves. Jesus teaches us that by being generous with the poor and having an open hand we will have treasure in heaven.

When life is hard, we can cast our cares on the Lord. The Psalm for this morning, Psalm 55, says “Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you;he will never permit the righteous to be moved. - Psalm 55.23 RSV.  The righteous are those washed in the blood of the lamb. We cannot be good enough to deserve God's love and provision. Rather, we are made righteous in Christ, and God for his part, is “is kind to the ungrateful and the selfish.” (Luke 6.35).

32 Do not be afraid, you, my little flock. Your Father has determined to give you his kingdom. 33 Sell what you have, and give alms, so providing yourselves with a purse that time cannot wear holes in, an inexhaustible treasure laid up in heaven, where no thief comes near, no moth consumes. 34 Where your treasure-house is, there your heart is too.

- Luke 12:32-35 Knox

"Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom. 33 Sell your possessions, and give alms; provide yourselves with purses that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys. 34 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
