Solidarity with the Poor, not the Rich

During this election season, we hear a lot about giving tax breaks to the rich, cutting so-called entitlements and social services. Do we turn around the economy by placating the rich with tax breaks, or by ensuring the common good? Providing buying power and a social safety net for the poor and middle class?

In 1968, in Medellín, Columbia, Roman Catholic Bishops enunciated the doctrine of the preferential option for the poor. God's prophetic word calls us to solidarity with the poor. The rich are invited to the Reign of God too, but they too, must be in solidarity with the poor. God's prophetic word pronounces judgment on those who wallow in luxury and self-indulgence, and care not for issues of justice or the poor. How much is enough for the rich in this country? Do they really need another tax break?

"Hell and destruction are never full; so the eyes of man are never satisfied." - Proverbs 27.20.

Believers need to hear and obey God's word, as they consider choosing their leaders this fall.

A LEAP OUT VERSE TODAY; THE BIBLE CLEARLY TEACHES US WHETHER WE SHOULD BE IN SOLIDARITY WITH THE RICH OR THE POOR :

"As a cage is full of birds, So their houses are full of deceit. Therefore they have become great and grown rich. They have grown fat, they are sleek; Yes, they surpass the deeds of the wicked; They do not plead the cause, The cause of the fatherless; Yet they prosper, And the right of the needy they do not defend. Shall I not punish them for these things?' says the Lord. 'Shall I not avenge Myself on such a nation as this?' - JEREMIAH 5:27-29, NKJV
